The calculator gives straight-line distance, which is almost always shorter than the road. Hobbiton to Rivendell is about 300 miles as a bird flies and about 460 by the Great East Road. Hobbiton to Mount Doom is roughly 1,300 straight and about 1,800 by the route Frodo and Sam walked. Road figures follow the estimates in Karen Wynn Fonstad's Atlas of Middle-earth and are approximate. For pace, Frodo averaged close to ten miles a day across the whole 183 days, though the company covered more than twenty on good road with ponies.
