Timeline of Middle-earth

The three Ages in order, with the events that changed the map.

This timeline runs from the First Age to the start of the Fourth, and it is built around places rather than kings. Each entry names where the event happened, so you can jump from a date to a point on the map. The First Age ends with the drowning of Beleriand, the Second with the fall of Barad-dûr in SA 3441, the Third with the War of the Ring in TA 3019 and the sailing from the Grey Havens. Dates follow the Tale of Years in Appendix B, and earlier First Age dates are approximate.

    Nogrod and Belegost founded Blue Mountains

    The Dwarves built two cities in the eastern slopes of the range long before the rising of the Sun, and traded with the Elves of Beleriand.

First Age

    Durin looks into the lake Mirrormere

    Durin the Deathless saw a crown of stars reflected over his head in the daylit water and took it as a sign to found Khazad-dûm.

  2. FA 455The Silmarillion

    Himring holds in the Dagor Bragollach Himling

    Maedhros kept his hill-fortress when Morgoth's sudden assault of flame broke the leaguer of Angband and overran the lands around it.

    Dorthonion falls to Morgoth Tol Fuin

    The Dagor Bragollach overran the highland, which afterwards was called Taur-nu-Fuin, the Forest under Nightshade.

    Barahir's outlaws betrayed Tol Fuin

    Gorlim's capture led Morgoth's servants to the hidden camp. Barahir was killed and his son Beren was left alone in the highland.

    The Men of Brethil set a tall grey stone above Cabed Naeramarth in memory of Túrin and Nienor.

    Morwen dies at the stone Tol Morwen

    Morwen came to the memorial, found Húrin there, and died beside it. She was buried under the stone.

    Ossiriand is broken and Harlindon remains Harlindon

    The War of Wrath drowned Beleriand. The land south of the new gulf, once the eastern margin of Ossiriand, was left above the sea.

    Ruin of the Dwarf-cities Blue Mountains

    The War of Wrath broke the land. Nogrod and Belegost fell into ruin and their people migrated east to Khazad-dûm.

    Beleriand drowns and Himling is left Himling

    After the War of Wrath the sea covered Beleriand. The summit of Himring remained above the water as an island.

    The land sinks Tol Fuin

    Beleriand was broken and drowned after the War of Wrath, and only the peaks of Dorthonion remained above the sea as Tol Fuin.

    The sea spares the stone Tol Morwen

    Beleriand was drowned, but the memorial stood unmoved above the water, and the island about it was named Tol Morwen.

    At the end of the First Age Thangorodrim and Angband were destroyed. The cold and waste of the far north remained as a legacy.

    At the end of the War of Wrath the land west of the Blue Mountains broke and sank beneath the Great Sea.

    The breaking of Beleriand let the sea flood inland, cutting the Gulf of Lune between Forlindon and Harlindon.

Second Age

    The Havens founded Grey Havens

    After Beleriand sank, Círdan the Shipwright settled the shores of the new gulf and built the harbour of Mithlond under Gil-galad.

    Lindon settled after the drowning of Beleriand Forlindon

    Elves who survived the War of Wrath and stayed in Middle-earth gathered on the coasts north and south of the new gulf.

    Gil-galad rules from north of the Lune Forlindon

    The last High King of the Noldor held Lindon north of the river, keeping watch on Eriador and on the growing power in the east.

    Celeborn and Galadriel dwell south of the Lune Harlindon

    The pair lived in Lindon south of the river for a time in the early Second Age before crossing into Eriador.

    Noldor settled the land west of Khazad-dûm and built Ost-in-Edhil, trading and working with the Dwarves across the mountains.

    The mountains fenced by Sauron Ephel Dúath

    Sauron chose Mordor for its natural walls and garrisoned every pass through the Mountains of Shadow.

    Barad-dûr raised on a spur Ered Lithui

    Sauron built his tower on an arm of the Ered Lithui, using the mountains as its back wall.

    Building of the Dark Tower Barad-dûr

    Sauron settled in Mordor and began Barad-dûr, completing it after the forging of the One Ring.

    Sauron chose the mountain-walled land as his stronghold and began building Barad-dûr in the northwest.

    Númenórean havens on the west coast Lond Daer

    The Númenóreans built harbours and strongholds along the shores of Middle-earth, of which the Great Haven at the Gwathló was the chief one in the north.

    The Rings of Power forged Eregion

    The Nine and the Seven were made with Sauron's help. Celebrimbor made the Three alone, and Sauron never touched them.

    The One Ring forged Mount Doom

    Sauron made the Ruling Ring in the Sammath Naur, pouring much of his own power into it in order to control the other Rings.

    Elrond founds Imladris Rivendell

    After the fall of Eregion, Elrond led the surviving Noldor north into the hidden valley and made it a stronghold.

    Sauron's army sacked Ost-in-Edhil and killed Celebrimbor. Moria was shut, and Elrond withdrew north to found Imladris.

    Sauron's forces had besieged the valley for three years. Armies from Lindon and a Númenórean fleet under Tar-Minastir drove them out of Eriador.

    Long felling for timber and settlement stripped the woods between the Brandywine and the Greyflood, leaving the coastal wood on the cape.

    Tar-Minastir's navy came east and, with the Elves of Lindon, drove Sauron out of Eriador.

    Shipwrights working out of Lond Daer cut the woods of Enedwaith along the Gwathló. The native men resisted and were driven into the eastern hills.

    The King's Men of Númenor fortified the southern coasts and ruled the Haradrim as subjects, leaving a lasting hostility to the north.

    The Faithful of Númenor built Pelargir on the Anduin as their principal harbor in Middle-earth.

    Ar-Pharazôn lands at Umbar Umbar

    The last King of Númenor came ashore with an army so great that Sauron surrendered and was taken to the island as a captive.

    Elendil comes ashore in Lindon Grey Havens

    The nine ships of the Faithful were carried east by the destruction of Númenor. Elendil landed in the coasts of Lindon and was welcomed by Gil-galad.

    The coasts reshaped Tolfalas

    The changes that followed the Downfall of Númenor altered the western shores, leaving Tolfalas as a bare island in the bay.

    The world made round Belegaer

    Ar-Pharazôn's fleet sailed west against the Ban. Númenor was drowned, Aman was removed, and the seas were bent.

    Gil-galad builds Elostirion Tower Hills

    The tallest of the three towers was raised for Elendil, and the Stone of Emyn Beraid was set in it.

    Annúminas was made the seat of the North-kingdom beside Lake Evendim, and one of the palantíri of Númenor was set there.

    Isildur brought the black stone from Númenor and placed it on the hill, and the King of the Mountains swore fealty on it.

    The mountain king swore at the Stone of Erech and then withheld his men from the war. Isildur cursed them to no rest until the oath was kept.

    The king of the mountain men, who had sworn allegiance to Isildur at the Stone of Erech, refused to fight when Sauron made war on Gondor, and Isildur cursed him and his people.

    Sauron stormed Minas Ithil. Isildur fled down the Anduin with a seedling of the White Tree to seek help from his father.

    The mountain men refused to fight Sauron, and Isildur cursed them to have no rest until their oath was kept.

    Elendil's watch Weathertop

    Tradition recorded by Aragorn holds that Elendil stood upon Amon Sûl waiting for Gil-galad before the Last Alliance marched east.

    Gil-galad led the Elves of Lindon east with Elendil in the Last Alliance, and did not return from the siege of Barad-dûr.

    The Last Alliance fights on the Dagorlad Dead Marshes

    The armies of Elves and Men met Sauron's host on the plain before the Morannon. The marshes later spread over the graves.

    Battle of Dagorlad Dagorlad

    The Last Alliance defeated Sauron's host on the plain, opening the way to the siege of Barad-dur.

    The Siege of Barad-dûr Barad-dûr

    The Last Alliance besieged the tower for seven years until Sauron came forth and was overthrown, and the Ring was cut from his hand.

    The Last Alliance crosses the plain Plateau of Gorgoroth

    The armies of Gil-galad and Elendil defeated Sauron's host on Gorgoroth and laid siege to Barad-dûr.

    The Ring not destroyed Mount Doom

    Isildur cut the Ring from Sauron's hand and Elrond urged him to unmake it in the fire, but he kept it as weregild for his father and brother.

    Sauron overthrown by the Last Alliance Mordor

    Elendil and Gil-galad overthrew Sauron on the slopes of Orodruin, and Isildur cut the One Ring from his hand.

Third Age

    Orcs ambushed Isildur's company by the Anduin. Isildur and three of his sons were killed and the One Ring was lost in the river.

    The eighth King of Gondor was killed fighting Easterlings, the first of Gondor's long wars with the peoples of the east.

    As the Dúnedain of Arnor dwindled the city was deserted, and the royal seat and its Stone moved to Fornost before the kingdom split in three.

    After Arnor divided, Fornost became the seat of the kings of Arthedain and the keeping-place of the North-kingdom's seeing-stones.

    The Witch-king established his realm in the far north and built his power at Carn Dûm, beginning the long war against Arnor's successor kingdoms.

    The Witch-king established the realm of Angmar at Carn Dûm and began the long campaign to destroy the kingdoms of Arnor.

    The King set the carved figures of Isildur and Anarion above the Anduin to mark the northern limit of Gondor's realm.

    A lord of the hill-men took the realm, secretly allied with Angmar, and the Dúnedain of Rhudaur were destroyed or driven out.

    Hobbits of Stoor kind who had settled between the Hoarwell and the Loudwater fled the growing danger, some going west toward Bree.

    Angmar burned Amon Sûl and broke the tower. The palantír was rescued and taken to Fornost.

    Civil war over the half-blood claim of Eldacar burned Osgiliath and cost Gondor its fleet. The defeated faction founded the Corsair state at Umbar.

    The Dome of Stars burns Osgiliath

    The city was sacked during the Kin-strife. The Dome of Stars fell and the palantír of Osgiliath was lost in the river.

    Castamir defeated Pelargir

    Eldacar broke the usurper's forces and besieged Pelargir. Castamir's sons escaped by sea and took Umbar.

    Battle of the Crossings of Erui Lebennin

    Eldacar defeated and killed the usurper Castamir at the river crossing on the border of Lebennin, ending the Kin-strife.

    The Corsairs take Umbar Umbar

    The sons of the defeated usurper Castamir escaped from Pelargir and seized Umbar, founding the Corsair realm.

    The Shire is granted Brandywine Bridge

    Argeleb II gave the land beyond the bridge to the hobbits on condition that they keep the Bridge of Stonebows in repair and speed the king's messengers.

    Marcho and Blanco crossed the Brandywine with a following of hobbits under a grant from King Argeleb II. Shire-reckoning begins from this year.

    The end of Cardolan and the coming of the wights Barrow-downs

    The Great Plague killed the last of the Dúnedain of Cardolan, and evil spirits out of Angmar and Rhudaur entered the empty barrows of Tyrn Gorthad, among them the grave of the prince who fell in the war of TA 1409.

    The plague swept north through Eriador and emptied much of the land, leaving Tharbad half-deserted.

    The Towers of the Teeth left empty Black Gate

    Gondor had raised Carchost and Narchost beside the Morannon after Sauron's overthrow to keep watch on an empty Mordor. After the Great Plague the garrisons were withdrawn and the towers stood empty.

    The capital moves west Minas Tirith

    After the Great Plague, King Tarondor moved the royal seat from ruined Osgiliath to Minas Anor.

    The Wainrider wars Rhûn

    A confederacy of Easterling peoples began nearly a century of war on Gondor's northern and eastern borders.

    The Northmen are broken East Bight

    The Wainriders overran Rhovanion, ending the settled realm of the Northmen whose farms had cleared the East Bight.

    The Wainriders invade Sea of Rhûn

    A confederation from the east overran Rhovanion and killed King Narmacil II in battle, cutting off Gondor's eastern lands.

    The Wainriders overrun the plains Rhovanion

    The eastern confederacy destroyed the kingdom of the Northmen and drove the survivors north and west.

    Ondoher falls before the Morannon Dagorlad

    King Ondoher of Gondor and both his sons were killed on the plain before the Morannon fighting the Wainriders, and Gondor's northern army was overthrown.

    The Battle of the Camp Ithilien

    After the Wainriders had killed King Ondoher, Eärnil came north with the victorious Southern Army, fell on their camp while they were feasting, and destroyed their host.

    Variags attacked Gondor from the south alongside the Haradrim while the Wainriders struck from the northeast, killing King Ondoher.

    The Witch-king's army took the city in winter. Arvedui, last king of Arthedain, fled north and was lost at sea with both palantíri.

    The Battle of Fornost Fornost

    Eärnur of Gondor, Círdan and the Elves of Lindon destroyed Angmar's forces. The Witch-king escaped, and Glorfindel foretold his end would not come by the hand of man.

    After the fall of Fornost the last king of Arthedain wintered among the Snowmen of Forochel, who fed and sheltered him.

    The last king of Arthedain sheltered with the Snowmen of Forochel on the edge of Forodwaith before dying in the ice.

    The Balrog wakes Moria

    Dwarves mining for mithril released a Balrog of Morgoth. It killed Durin VI, and within a year the Dwarves abandoned Khazad-dûm.

    The Nazgûl return Mordor

    The Ringwraiths came back to Mordor and gathered there, and in TA 2002 they took Minas Ithil and its palantír.

    Amroth lost off the coast Dol Amroth

    Amroth of Lórien was swept out to sea while waiting for Nimrodel near the haven of Edhellond, and the city was named for him.

    Waiting for Nimrodel at Edhellond, Amroth was carried off by a storm and drowned trying to swim back to the shore.

    Thrain I settled in Erebor and found the Arkenstone, beginning the line of Kings under the Mountain.

    Minas Ithil is taken Ithilien

    The Nazgul captured the city and Ithilien began to empty as Gondor's people moved west of the Anduin.

    Renamed the Tower of Guard Minas Tirith

    When the Nazgûl took Minas Ithil, Minas Anor was renamed Minas Tirith and became the watch against Mordor.

    After a long siege the Ringwraiths took Minas Ithil and its palantír. It was renamed Minas Morgul, and Minas Anor became Minas Tirith.
