Nen Hithoel fills the widening of the Anduin between the gorge of the Argonath and the drop at Rauros. The western shore holds Amon Hen, the Hill of Sight, with the green lawn of Parth Galen at its feet where the Fellowship's boats were drawn up. Amon Lhaw, the Hill of Hearing, faces it from the eastern side. Between them at the lake's foot stands Tol Brandir, an island of bare rock that no one had ever climbed.
The Company reached the lake on 25 February TA 3019 and camped at Parth Galen. It was the point where a decision could no longer be delayed: west toward Minas Tirith, or east toward Mordor.
The Breaking of the Fellowship happened on these shores. Boromir followed Frodo up Amon Hen, orcs came out of the woods, Merry and Pippin were taken, and Frodo and Sam crossed the lake and landed at the foot of Amon Lhaw. The others laid Boromir in a boat and sent it over the falls.
