Forlindon

Forlindon is the northern wing of Lindon, the strip of coast that runs north from the Gulf of Lune with the Blue Mountains on its eastern side and Belegaer on its west. It is the top left corner of the Middle-earth map, above the Grey Havens, and it has no towns marked on it: the name covers open elven country rather than a city.

This land is what was left of Beleriand. When the War of Wrath ended the First Age, the sea took everything west of the Blue Mountains except this margin, and the Elves who did not sail settled there. The Silmarillion is plain about the division: in Lindon north of the Lune dwelt Gil-galad, last High King of the Noldor in Middle-earth, and Lindon south of the Lune was held for a time by Celeborn and Galadriel.

From Forlindon came the armies that fought Sauron twice. Gil-galad's people marched east in the war for Eriador in the seventeenth century of the Second Age, and again at the end of it in the Last Alliance, where Gil-galad was killed on the slopes of Orodruin. After that the north of Lindon emptied slowly. Elves still lived there through the Third Age, taking the road to the Havens when they chose to leave, and some remained into the Fourth.

   The last High King of the Noldor held Lindon north of the river, keeping watch on Eriador and on the growing power in the east.

   Gil-galad led the Elves of Lindon east with Elendil in the Last Alliance, and did not return from the siege of Barad-dûr.
