Angmar

Angmar occupied the cold country at the north end of the Misty Mountains, on both sides of the range, north of Rhudaur and the Ettenmoors. Carn Dûm was its seat. On the map it sits directly opposite the empty north of Eriador, well placed to strike south at the divided Dúnedain.

It was made for one purpose. A lord came out of the north whom men called the Witch-king, and only later was it understood that he was the chief of the Ringwraiths, working to finish the ruin of the north-kingdom. He gathered orcs, hill-men, and evil spirits, and where force failed he used the quarrels between Arthedain, Cardolan and Rhudaur.

Rhudaur was taken over by men friendly to Angmar and its Dúnedain line ended. In TA 1409 Angmar overran Cardolan and broke the tower of Amon Sûl, and after the Great Plague its evil spirits settled in the empty barrows of the downs. Arthedain survived, with help from Lindon and Rivendell, until TA 1974, when the Witch-king took Fornost and Arvedui fled to Forochel.

Vengeance came the next year. Eärnur of Gondor landed at the Grey Havens with a fleet, and with Círdan, Glorfindel and the remnant of the north he shattered Angmar's army near Fornost. The Witch-king escaped south and reappeared long after at Minas Morgul. Angmar itself was never refounded, and its hills stayed empty and ill-omened.

   Angmar founded in the north

   The Witch-king established the realm of Angmar at Carn Dûm and began the long campaign to destroy the kingdoms of Arnor.

2. TA 1409 · Appendices

   Fall of Cardolan and Amon Sûl

   Angmar invaded the divided north-kingdom, destroyed the tower on Weathertop and ended Cardolan's line of princes.

3. TA 1975 · Appendices

   Battle of Fornost ends Angmar

   Eärnur's host from Gondor, with Círdan's elves and Glorfindel, destroyed the army of Angmar. The Witch-king fled and the realm ended.
