Eaves of Fangorn

The eaves are where Fangorn stops and the plains of the Wold and the Entwash valley begin, on the forest's eastern side. Rohan's riders knew the boundary well and did not cross it, holding that the wood was dangerous and best left alone.

The orc company carrying Merry and Pippin toward Isengard was caught against this edge by Éomer's éored, surrounded on the evening of 28 February and destroyed at sunrise the next morning. In the confusion the two hobbits cut their bonds and crawled into the trees, which is why the riders found no sign of them. Grishnákh, the orc from Mordor who had dragged them off for his own purposes, was shot at the forest edge.

The Rohirrim burned the orc carcasses in a heap near the eaves. When Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli reached the spot on the evening of 30 February they camped by the fire and were visited in the night by an old man who vanished, and their horses ran off. Later Ents and Huorns moved out through this same edge on their way south to Helm's Deep.
