Rohan's main river, running from the mountains through the Mark to a marshy mouth on Anduin

The Entwash draws its water from two directions: the southern spurs of the Misty Mountains around Methedras and the forest of Fangorn, and the northern slopes of the White Mountains, where the Snowbourn comes down from Harrowdale past Edoras. Those streams meet and run north-east across Rohan, dividing the Wold in the north from the Eastfold and the king's lands in the south.
Its mouth is not a clean one. Before it reaches the Anduin below Rauros it spreads into the fens of Nindalf, called the Wetwang, a waterlogged plain that merges eastward into the Dead Marshes. Frodo and Sam skirted that country after leaving the Emyn Muil.
The name comes from the Ents, since its upper waters rise in and around Fangorn. For the Rohirrim it was a practical boundary: crossings of the Entwash decided how the éoreds moved, and the host on its way to Dunharrow and to Gondor had to reckon with the fords.
