Lake Evendim sits in a bowl of hills well north of the Shire's northern boundary, roughly on the same line as Fornost to the east. Its Sindarin name, Nenuial, means Lake of Twilight. The Baranduin rises here and runs south past the Shire's eastern border, so the river the hobbits call the Brandywine and the lake the Dúnedain named are the same water.
Elendil chose this shore for Annúminas, and while Arnor lasted the lake was the heart of the kingdom. After the city was deserted the whole region emptied, and for most of the Third Age the hills and the water were unpeopled, watched only by the Rangers who ranged that country.
The Fourth Age brought it back into use. King Elessar rebuilt Annúminas, and in SR 1436 he rode north with the Queen and dwelt for a time by the lake, summoning his friends from the Shire to meet him at the Brandywine Bridge rather than crossing the border himself.
