Harlindon

Harlindon is the southern half of Lindon, the coastal country below the Gulf of Lune. On the map it hangs off the southwest end of the Blue Mountains, west of the empty lands of Minhiriath and well south of the Shire. Like Forlindon it carries a regional name and no settlement: the harbour that serves both halves is Mithlond, at the head of the gulf.

The land is a survival. Before the War of Wrath this coast was part of Ossiriand, the country of the Green-elves between the mountains and the river Gelion, and when Beleriand went under the sea only the eastern edge was left standing. The Elves who remained there after the First Age were a mixture of Sindar, Green-elves and Noldor who would not sail.

The Silmarillion names the household that made Harlindon famous: in Lindon south of the Lune dwelt Celeborn, kinsman of Thingol, and his wife Galadriel. They left in the Second Age, going east over the mountains, and their road ran on through Eregion and at last to Lothlórien. Harlindon itself stayed quiet, an elven country that the wars of Arnor and Angmar never reached, emptying slowly as its people took ship from the Havens.

   The War of Wrath drowned Beleriand. The land south of the new gulf, once the eastern margin of Ossiriand, was left above the sea.

   Celeborn and Galadriel dwell south of the Lune

   The pair lived in Lindon south of the river for a time in the early Second Age before crossing into Eriador.

   The Elves of Lindon dwindle

   Through the Third Age the elven population of both halves of Lindon shrank as ships left Mithlond, a movement that quickened after the War of the Ring.
