Bag End

Bag End is at the top of the Hill, directly above Hobbiton village, with a round green door, a tunnel of a hallway, panelled walls and windows looking west over the garden and down to the Water. Its postal address in the Shire is Bag End, Underhill, Hobbiton. Bagshot Row, the lane of smaller holes where the Gamgees lived, runs below it.

Bungo Baggins dug it for his wife Belladonna Took, and their son Bilbo inherited it. The Dwarves came to its door in TA 2941; Bilbo returned to find his furniture being auctioned off and had to buy much of it back. Frodo lived there from TA 2989 until he sold the hole to Lobelia Sackville-Baggins in TA 3018 as cover for his departure.

Under Lotho and then Saruman it became the headquarters of the ruffians who took over the Shire, and Saruman was killed at its door in TA 3019. Sam Gamgee moved in afterwards with Rose, and the Baggins hole stayed in his family.

   Bilbo returns with the Ring

   Bilbo came home to find his effects for sale and settled back into Bag End, keeping the ring he had found under the Misty Mountains.

2. TA 3001 · The Lord of the Rings

   The Ring passes to Frodo

   Bilbo left Bag End after his party and, at Gandalf's insistence, left the Ring on the mantelpiece for his heir.

3. TA 3019, November 3 · The Lord of the Rings

   Saruman dies at the door

   Sharkey, revealed as Saruman, was cornered at Bag End at the end of the Scouring of the Shire and was killed by Gríma on the step.
