Cormallen is a wide green space among woods in north Ithilien, close to the eastern bank of the Anduin opposite Cair Andros and within sight of the river. The name refers to the golden culumalda trees that grow there.
After the Ring went into the fire and the Black Gate fell, the army had nowhere sensible to go but back to the river. Aragorn brought the host to this field and set up camp while the wounded were tended.
Gandalf flew with Gwaihir and two other eagles to the slopes of Mount Doom and carried Frodo and Sam out of the ash. They woke in soft beds under the trees, and Sam's first question was how long he had slept. Both were dressed and led out to the field, where Aragorn set them on his own seat and the whole army stood and shouted their names.
From Cormallen the host went on to Minas Tirith for the crowning of King Elessar on 1 May TA 3019.
