Beorn's house lies between the Carrock and the western eaves of Mirkwood, in a wide clearing ringed by a thorn hedge, with oak-trunk halls, stables, bee pastures and rows of flowers. Gandalf brought Thorin's company there after the Eagles left them on the Carrock, introducing the dwarves in pairs so that Beorn's temper would hold.
Beorn is a skin-changer who takes the shape of a great black bear. He keeps no servants: ponies, dogs and sheep carry the dishes and set the table. He went out in the night to check Gandalf's story, found the goblin and Warg tracks himself, and came back willing to help.
He gave the company food, ponies as far as the Forest Gate, and a warning not to drink from the enchanted stream or to stray from the path in Mirkwood. He came to Erebor as a bear at the Battle of Five Armies, broke the goblin guard and killed Bolg. Afterward he ruled the Beornings in the upper vales.
