On the map the Poros runs west out of the Mountains of Shadow to join the Anduin below Ithilien, and the crossing sits where the road from Harad meets it. North of the ford lies south Ithilien and the road to the Cross-roads and Minas Morgul; south lies Harondor, the debated land between Gondor and the Haradrim.
The river was Gondor's practical frontier in the later Third Age, once the realm had lost the country down to the Harnen. Holding the ford meant holding the only convenient way north for a southern army.
In TA 2885 the Haradrim crossed in force. King Folcwine of Rohan sent help under his twin sons Folcred and Fastred, who were both killed in the Battle of the Crossings of Poros. The invasion was thrown back, and Gondor sent a great weregild of gold to Rohan for the loss.
